Moving on with the Neck

Time to sort out the neck and it's attachment to the body. Remembering this will be a fully removable neck..

The neck is a 5 piece one of Peruvian Walnut & Maple..

Starting on the Necks

OK as you might remember some time ago I laminated up the 5 piece necks for both guitars so now it is time to start making the straight stick into a neck..

First step is to cut & glue the scarf joint for the peghead. The cut is first made on the band saw then cleaned up with a hand plane before gluing back on to the remainder of the neck. Angle of the joint is 14 degrees.

Many people do this cut with some sort of jig on a table saw but in the interest of space and not having to store yet another jig this is a quick and simple method.

Also many people have elaborate gluing jigs to prevent the joint from slipping when clamping pressure is applied. I find some binding tale and a bit of care is all that is really needed.

The result, you can slide the cut piece back when gluing to
reduce the amount of thickness work with the plane
 you need to do after the fact

thickness. The veneers need to be accounted for and then
the pegheads planed to final thickness. This also establishes
the final nut position

Starting Work on the Neck

The neck of this guitar will follow the same design idea of being a simple design on a small guitar.. in this case a sandwich or Cedro/Ebony/Cedro.. I have to admit I like working with Cedro (Spanish Cedar) it has a great odour..

The neck sandwich was first glued up then the scarf joint is cut, smoothed with a hand plane and glued up..
I've seen lots of ways to glue the odd angles of a scarf joint and keep things from slipping but the easiest I've seen is just to use binding tape to hold things from slipping while clamping pressure is applied so that is what I use

One advantage of not being on a production schedule is I can do the steps in guitar making in the order I feel like not necessarily one order that makes the most sense.. I've taken a break from working on the body to work a bit on the neck.. Tonight I cut the scarf joint planed it flat and glued it back on the neck blank..

I used a technique I saw on some other Luthier's blog (sorry can't remember which of the many I look at) to stop the joint from sliding around until the glue gets tacky and clamps tight.. Worked well.... I think the pictures below are pretty self explanatory. The tape is binding tape so lots of stick..
